“We are confronted with a considerable development of consciousness that has already taken place, but now that consciousness is thrown outwards with a special direction, intelligence being extroverted, and there is an unusual demand on the part of the child to know the reasons of things. Knowledge can be best given where there is eagerness to learn, so this is the period when the seed of everything can be sown, the child’s mind being like a fertile field, ready to receive what will germinate into culture.” ~ Maria Montessori, To Educate the Human Potential
The Montessori curriculum for ages 9-12 takes advantage of the broad interests the children have during these years. Imagination is the tool allowing them to move from concrete objects and representations to abstract thinking. They seek to bring intellectual order to the things they encounter in the world. These children are given access to all of knowledge and culture, and the tools to develop their understanding and new skills according to their own interests.
The upper elementary years also form a period of intense moral formation. Children in these years not only want to know good and bad, but wish to know motivation for actions, as well. They enjoy discussing moral issues, and seeking creative solutions to situations in the environment.
